We now have "Vanity Sizing" in store bought clothing meaning in the 20's, 30's, 40's, and so on there was no such thing as size 1-5. We have created these sizes recently (20-30 years) to boost sale in ready-to- wear. If you fit in to the size 4 when you thought you were a size 10 then you are more likely to buy the garment. Patterns have never been vanity sized. One should always refer to the sizing chart (back of pattern) and own body measurements to get the closest fitting pattern. And even then there is still fitting adjustments. Welcome to the addiction (and I don't use that term loosely) ;)
