Vintage practice makes perfect?

I mentioned in a previous post that I am fairly new to sewing, but sort of addicted (I use that term loosely). Anyway, I joined patternreview.com to gain a little bit of confidence  while building on my skill set. The members there are so nice and helpful. There’s one young lady in particular whose only been sewing for a few years,  but the detail on her clothing is amazing (View her wardrobe sample here). So, I e-mailed her to see if she had any advice for a late starter. She was so kind and accommodating. She said that she was self-taught also and basically learned by practicing on vintage patterns. I took her advice and started searching for vintage patterns and happily stumbled upon this wonderful site and this one. The patterns are very reasonable, and they even offers free shipping for multiple purchases.  Now, if I can just figure out those crazy pattern sizes.  My measurements don’t match up with the vintage pattern sizes. Was there really that much of a difference in sizing between then and now? So much to learn!

***The pattern above is a beautiful vintage Vogue pattern that I recently sold on Ebay. I hated to let it go, but it was a little too advanced for me. I’ll definitely need something more basic.

  • Love it ! Makes me wanna learn

  • That is gorgeous, I really love the neckline! I’m always worried my bra will show if I make one like that.

  • We now have “Vanity Sizing” in store bought clothing meaning in the 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, and so on there was no such thing as size 1-5. We have created these sizes recently (20-30 years) to boost sale in ready-to- wear. If you fit in to the size 4 when you thought you were a size 10 then you are more likely to buy the garment. Patterns have never been vanity sized. One should always refer to the sizing chart (back of pattern) and own body measurements to get the closest fitting pattern. And even then there is still fitting adjustments. Welcome to the addiction (and I don’t use that term loosely) ;)

  • Angerella, thank you for the clarification. So much to learn!!!!!
